If you suspect you have been bitten by a bat or any wild animal, you should see your doctor or local medical clinic and report it to them for guidance.

It is entirely possible that a single bat or a small group of bats take up in a bat house. It can take time and it depends on the specific conditions. If a bat house is not suitable as a "maternity colony roost", then it may be what we call a bachelor colony consisting of male and/or non-reproducing pups. I have found micro bats roosting in umbrellas, roll up doors, behind gutters, behind shutters and anywhere that is warm and cozy. They prefer about a 3/4" to 1" gap. Thanks for loving bats!

We have had bats gather and start roosting in a bat house while it is still being hung and had bat houses take 3 years to get bats. If after 3 years you are not getting bats, examine the installation and see about moving it somewhere more favorable. Thanks for loving bats!

It is possible more bats will show up. Or, this could be a bachelor bat just hanging out on his way through. Bats can live to be up to 40 years old the in the wild, they are one of the longest lived mammals for their size and they learn through experience and remember things that help them survive. They will also "bring friends" when they have found a good roost. There are maternal colonies (which is the kind of colony we tend to think of ) which contain females that give birth to a pup each year. That colony will typically roost int he same place year after year and give birth. They can reach large number, but males and non-reproducing pups will not be welcome in that colony. Then there are what we call bachelor colonies. These can be much smaller and will contain males and young pups. Those will move around more, they could be in one place one day and another place on another day. But both are important an need safe roosting space. I hope your bat friend will bring more friends and you will have a happy colony on your hands. Thanks for loving bats!

The ideal number of bat bites is ZERO. I've been bitten by many MANY things and I still don't have spider, snake, dog, cat, rat, bat, human, fish, or any other super powers. It is a myth that you can obtain special super power essence through the bite of any animal. It is well known that the animal must either be of an alien origin (from space) or survived super irradiation under certain uncontrolled conditions before its bite can instill super powers. Unless you own the pole in question, you should not be hanging anything on it. If you receive power, internet etc... through the use of that pole, it is likely you don't own it or don't have legal permission to use it for anything except its designated purpose. Adding a bat house would be adding a "hazard" i.e. possible forced interaction with wildlife, to anyone that needed to service utilities on that pole. That said, adding a bat house to your property is an excellent way to provide safe roosting space and encourage more bats to live in the area. Bats do a fantastic job of converting bugs into guano (bat poop) So if you do add one on a pole, make sure it is not over areas where kids play, pets sleep or spend time, doors, windows etc... POOP Happens. Unless you were to get a sizeable colony, the accumulation of bat guano outside under the roost is generally minimal and the weather will tend to neutralize any harmful effects of it. If you do get a huge colony, consider adding a planter under the bat house or using a shovel (wear an N95 mask) and use the guano for fertilizer elsewhere. Thanks for loving bats!

Thanks for loving bats. Research shows that the typical minimum height that is best for bat houses is 10 to 12 feet to the landing board. Some species prefer 15 feet. One reason for his is when bats leave the bat house they need plenty of room to gain speed while falling so they can begin to fly and maneuver. If a bat house is too lower, their maneuvering room can be more limiting allowing predators to more easily catch them or can present a problem for pups due to less experience flying. However, all that said I have seen successful bat houses mounted as low as 6 feet. In fact, one was mounted at about 4 feet, it had been mounted in a work area so the workers could understand how to hang them as they had more than 40 to install. They forgot about it for a few months and by the time they got back, a small colony of bats had began using it. I personally visited that bat house, explained to the bats how they had it all wrong, but they didn't listen to me. It goes to show, we can (and should) try to follow the guidelines, but ultimately the bats will decide what they want.

The price is the price, everything is more expensive lately. With material costs, labor costs, shipping costs, we set the price to what we can sell them for and that's it. If they don't sell, we'll stop making them, here we are 18 years later, still making bat houses. I appreciate not everyone can afford the prices, but we do make them to the highest quality standards and in the U.S.A. We've been offered many times to have them MFG overseas and shipped in bulk for about 1/2 the cost (and I personally know some of our competition does exactly that), but I wouldn't give the examples we received away for free, must less import and sell them. I know we are different and we can't compete on price, so we compete on quality. Funny thing is, I've noticed the "other places" raising their prices closer to ours and quoting or paraphrasing our information, even trying to cheat and say they sell "Habitats For Bats". I decided to be flattered rather than angry with them. For 18 years I've watched them come and go, but we are still here. Thanks for loving bats.

We give 3 coats of a high quality exterior latex paint on our commercial bat houses, and recommend the same when we sell our kits.

You will need to provide the new bat house (sounds like you've done that) and exclude the bats from the previous location. Simply hanging a bat house will rarely encourage the bats to move on their own, it's more likely they will simply start living in both places. Thanks for loving bats!

If you can find one sturdy enough that does not "wilt" in the heat, there is no reason you can't use a composite or plastic pole.
